When you picture an emergency nurse, you think of someone who’s quick on their feet, sharp under pressure, and able to handle whatever chaos comes through the hospital doors. That’s Moz, a full-time emergency nurse, mum of two, and coffee-loving Brissie local who somehow manages to balance life-saving shifts with the beautiful chaos of parenting.
We sat down with Moz to chat about her dual life in scrubs and snuggles, the challenges of raising little ones while working in healthcare, and how the HipSurfer has helped her protect her body and energy for both her patients and her kids.
Meet Moz and Her Crew
Moz lives in Brisbane with her husband and their two kids: Madinah, a bubbly three-year-old, and Maalik, her sweet and clingy 11-month-old. Saturdays are for markets, cafes, and soaking up the Queensland sun, anything to avoid staying inside tidying up.
But weekdays? They’re full-on. With early daycare drop-offs, long shifts at the trauma hospital, and evenings filled with tired kids wanting cuddles, Moz’s days are the definition of a balancing act.
The Juggle is Real
Before discovering the HipSurfer, Moz admits mornings were stressful. Getting two kids out of the car, through daycare doors, and into her arms alongside bags and bottles felt impossible. “I couldn’t hit add-to-cart fast enough,” she laughs. Now she can carry Maalik securely on her hip, hold Madinah’s hand, and manage the bags without breaking a sweat or her back.
And the HipSurfer isn’t just for mornings. At the end of a long shift, Maalik often wants nothing but cuddles. Instead of cooking dinner one-handed, Moz now pops him on the HipSurfer so he gets the closeness he craves while she still gets things done. Even Grandma loves it and confidently uses it around the house.
Life as a Nurse and Mum
The hardest part of balancing both roles? Switching gears. “In emergency, you’re constantly on high alert, putting everyone else’s needs first,” Moz says. “Then you come home, and your kids need a different kind of energy, patience, love, and presence.”
That emotional shift can be draining. Some days, after giving her all at work, Moz feels like there’s nothing left in the tank for her kids. The mum guilt creeps in. Over time, she’s learned that perfection isn’t the goal. “It’s about being present in the moment I’m in, whether that’s with my patients or with my children.”
Protecting Her Body as a Healthcare Parent
Moz has seen firsthand how repetitive lifting and awkward carrying can take a toll on the body. “Parents underestimate the strain of carrying little ones,” she explains. “Your back, hips, and shoulders cop it.”
For her, the HipSurfer has been a game changer. By shifting the child’s weight to the hips instead of pulling on the spine, it reduces fatigue, prevents injury, and helps her maintain good posture. “It’s the same logic we use in nursing. We rely on equipment to make tasks safer and more efficient, so why wouldn’t we do the same at home?”
Advice for Other Healthcare Parents
Moz’s message is clear: invest in yourself. “Parenting is physically and emotionally demanding, and when you’re also working in a high-pressure job like healthcare, your energy is precious. Tools like the HipSurfer aren’t shortcuts, they’re about self-care. They protect your body, reduce strain, and give you more capacity to be present with your kids.”
Her advice to other parents on the fence about getting one? “You don’t realise how much you need it until you use it. It saves your back, makes drop-offs easier, and feels like that extra set of hands every parent wishes for.”
Moz’s Parenting Reminder
“You can’t pour from an empty cup. Don’t feel guilty about using tools, hacks, and support systems that make life easier. Looking after yourself means you show up better for your kids and your work.”
