Hip Seat vs Shoulder Carrier: Which Is Better for Your Back?
Shoulder pain from carrying your baby is more common than you think. Here’s how hip seat carriers compare to shoulder carriers and why switching could change how your body feels every day.
Occupational Therapist Mum Alaskah Hindry on Baby Carrying, Posture & the HipSurfer
Paediatric occupational therapist and mum Alaskah Hindry shares her perspective on motherhood, body awareness, and why the HipSurfer has become an everyday essential for busy parents.
What is the HipSurfer?
The HipSurfer is an ergonomic, doctor-approved hipseat baby carrier and bum bag in one.
It sits around your waist and gives your child a supportive seat, while the wide padded waistband helps redistribute their weight away from your arms, shoulders and back. Seat for them. Relief for you. Essentials close by. Bit clever, really.
How is the HipSurfer different from a traditional baby carrier?
Traditional carriers are brilliant for longer, fully strapped-in carries. The HipSurfer is different. It is built for the quick, repetitive carrying moments that happen all day long.
Toddler wants up. Toddler wants down. Baby needs soothing. Someone has suddenly lost the ability to walk through the carpark.
The HipSurfer has no shoulder straps, takes around 15 seconds to put on once fitted, and gives you support without the full carrier setup.
Is the HipSurfer hands-free?
No. The HipSurfer is not a hands-free carrier.
It gives your child a supportive seat and takes pressure off your body, but you must keep an arm or hand around your child at all times. Think of it as “hands-helped” carrying. Less strain, not zero supervision.
What age is the HipSurfer suitable for?
The HipSurfer can support different stages in different ways.
For newborns, it can be used as feeding, rocking and soothing support while baby stays held securely against you. From around 4 to 6 months, babies can sit on the HipSurfer facing in towards you. From around 6 months, once they have stronger head and neck control, they can explore facing out
Can I use the HipSurfer with a newborn?
Yes, but not as a standard seated hip carry.
For newborns, the HipSurfer is used as extra support while breastfeeding, rocking, soothing and holding your baby close. Newborns should always be supported safely, with their airway clear and their body held securely.
What can I fit in the HipSurfer storage?
The HipSurfer has built-in storage under the seat, plus pockets and a bottle holder.
You can fit small everyday essentials like:
- Phone
- Keys
- Cards
- Small wipes pack
- Nappy
- Dummy
- Snacks
- Lip balm
- Sunglasses
- Bottle
Not your entire life. Just the bits you somehow need every 3.5 minutes.
Is the HipSurfer Doctor Approved?
Yes. The HipSurfer is doctor-approved and recommended by health professionals including doctors, chiropractors, osteopaths, paediatric specialists and physiotherapists. It is designed to support more comfortable carrying and help reduce the strain of carrying babies and toddlers.
Can the HipSurfer help with wrist pain or mum thumb?
It may help reduce the strain that comes from constantly lifting and holding your child with your arms, hands and wrists.
Because the HipSurfer supports your child’s weight through the seat and waistband, your wrists are not doing the whole job alone.
If you have mum thumb, carpal tunnel, arthritis, wrist pain or another condition, get advice from your health practitioner first.
Does the HipSurfer help with back, shoulder or wrist pain?
The HipSurfer is designed to help reduce strain by redistributing your child’s weight through the wide padded waistband and supportive seat. It does not claim to cure pain or treat medical conditions, but it can make carrying feel more supported and less awkward.
If you are pregnant, recovering from birth, managing an injury, or dealing with a medical condition, check with your health practitioner first.
Is the HipSurfer good for grandparents?
Yes. Grandparents love a cuddle, but their backs are not always as enthusiastic.
The HipSurfer is quick to put on, easy to share between caregivers, and helps make carrying babies and toddlers more comfortable. It is especially useful for short carries, outings, holidays and the classic “Nanny, up!” moment.
Still adorable. Still heavy.
Can I return the HipSurfer if it does not feel right?
We offer returns on eligible full priced items within 30 days of delivery.
To be eligible, your item must be unused, in original condition, and returned with all original packaging, accessories and the Safety Manual.

What age can a baby use a hip seat carrier?
For seated carrying, the HipSurfer is generally suitable from around 4 months, depending on your baby’s size, strength and head and neck control.
For younger babies, the HipSurfer can be used as a support tool for feeding, rocking, soothing and holding, while your baby remains fully supported by you.
Children under 6 months should face inwards unless breastfeeding.
Is a hip seat carrier safe for babies?
A hip seat carrier can be safe for babies when it is used correctly, at the right stage, and with proper adult support.
The HipSurfer is designed to provide a supportive seat and help redistribute your child’s weight. It is not a hands-free carrier, so your child must be held securely by you at all times.
Always read the safety manual before use, check the product before each carry, and make sure your child is upright, supported and closely monitored.
Can I use a hip seat carrier for a newborn?
Yes, but not in the same way you would carry an older baby or toddler.
For newborns, the HipSurfer can be used as extra support while feeding, rocking, soothing and holding your baby close. It helps take some pressure off your arms, shoulders and wrists during those long hold-feed-soothe stretches.
Newborns must always be fully supported by you, with their airway clear and their body safely positioned.
Can my baby face out on the HipSurfer?
Yes, once your baby has enough head and neck control.
Younger babies should face in towards you. Children under 6 months should face inwards unless breastfeeding.
When facing out, keep your child upright, supported and closely monitored. Tiny people have big opinions and very little balance. Rude but true.
Does the HipSurfer support healthy hip positioning?
Yes. The HipSurfer is designed to support a healthy seated position, helping your child sit with their knees supported and their hips in a more natural position than dangling from your arms.
It is also recommended by health professionals who work with babies, children and families.
What is the HipSurfer weight limit?
The HipSurfer is safety tested to support children up to 20 kg.
It is designed for babies, toddlers and young children through the carrying years, especially for those quick “up, down, up again” moments, travel days, daycare runs and tired-leg emergencies.
As always, follow the safety manual, keep an arm around your child at all times, and stop using the HipSurfer if your child feels too heavy to carry safely or comfortably.
