The outing is rarely the problem. It's the bit where your toddler decides the pram is a no go at the far end of the car park, your bag is sliding off your shoulder, and you need a change table that doesn't exist.

After a lot of days out with two kids, this is the kit I actually leave the house with. Three pieces. Not seventeen.

1. The HipSurfer: for the carrying

It's basically a bum bag with a seat, which sounds ridiculous until your back says thank you. Doctor-approved, no shoulder straps, and on in about 15 seconds. Your little one sits on the seat, one arm still holds them, and the up, down, up again bit stops wrecking you by lunchtime.

As one mum put it, "Daycare drop-offs are no longer a juggling act, I just pop it on in 5 seconds."

2. The Travel Change Mat: for the nappy surprises

Change tables are never where you need them. The mat is waterproof, compact and wipes clean, so a park bench, the back seat or a cafe floor will do.

3. The Travel Bag: for keeping it all together

Storage, backpack or tote. It holds your HipSurfer and the bits that go with it, so nothing ends up rattling around the boot.

How I pack it

• In the HipSurfer storage: phone, keys, card, a few wipes, one snack.
• In the change mat: two nappies and a small pack of wipes, folded inside so it's one grab.
• In the Travel Bag: the HipSurfer when it's not on, the change mat, a spare top for whoever needs it.

Less lugging. Easier outings. More cuddles.
